After a four-year national and international search, with over 200 applicants, Julie Spring won the coveted position of Principal Harp of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, starting in the 2008/2009 season. Julie held the same position with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and filled in as Principal Harp with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the New Philharmonic, (Illinois), the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra, and the New World Symphony (Florida).
Mrs. Spring has performed at a Silk Road Workshop with Yo-Yo Ma: Night Music: Voice in the Leaves (Yanov-Yanovsky); the Civic Orchestra of Chicago's MusiCorps Educational Outreach Program. In Rochester, Julie has appeared in Britten's Nocturne for tenor solo and seven obligato instruments with the Eastman Symphony Orchestra; Debussy's Les Chansons de Bilitis with the Eastman Virtuosi Faculty Ensemble; "Music for All" in the Education Outreach Program, and also in the New Music Harp Festival. In addition to her busy performing schedule, she maintains a studio of private students.
Julie Spring hails from Lombard, Illinois, and her mentors were Sarah Bullen (Principal Harp, Chicago Symphony Orchestra) and Kathleen Bride (Professor of Harp, Eastman School of Music). Julie received her Bachelor of Music degree in both Harp Performance and Instrumental Music Education from Eastman in 2005 and received her Masters Degree in Orchestral Studies from the Chicago College of Performing Arts, Roosevelt University, in 2007.
New to Canada, Julie is enjoying her new Toronto home base with her husband, Tony. When she's not behind the harp, she enjoys biking, reading, baking (still working on that banana bread), and her cats, Maeci and Bettie. She also admits to a couple of television addictions, namely all house-hunting/real estate shows and CSI: Las Vegas.
